Kenneth Kellogg Bass Kenneth Kellogg, a first-year Adler Fellow, is a native of Washington, D.C. and a 2007 graduate of the Merola Opera Program. As a Merola participant, he created the role of Tobias in the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's The Hotel Casablanca in 2007. Kellogg received his bachelor's degree from Ohio University and his master's degree from the University of Michigan. Operatic roles include Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Mr. Olsen (Street Scene) and the Superintendent (Albert Herring), Mr. Kofner (The Consul), the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Seneca (L’incoronazione di Poppea), and Count des Grieux (Manon). Other highlights include roles in Where the Cross is Made at the Conservatory Project at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the creation of the role of the Old Man in James P. Johnson's De Organizer at the University of Michigan. Mr. Kellogg was a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and has been seen in concert with the Ann Arbor Symphony, Ann Arbor Pops Orchestra, and at the Kennedy Center. He was a winner in the Annapolis Opera competition and a national finalist in the 2007 Sun Valley Opera competition. Future plans include Balthazar in Menotti’s Amal and the Nights Visitors with Fargo-Moorhead Opera of North Dakota.
A 2007 Adler Fellow and former Merola Opera Program participant Heidi Melton made her San Francisco Opera debut as Marianne (Der Rosenkavalier) and also appeared as Diane (Iphigénie en Tauride) and Mary Todd Lincoln (Appomattox) She also debut with Opera Company of Philadelphia as Gertrude in Hansel and Gretel and Amelia (Un Ballo in Maschera) at Opera National Bordeaux and performed the role of Mrs. Grose (The Turn of the Screw) with San Francisco Opera Center at Lincoln Theater in Yountville and was heard as Amelia in scenes from Simon Boccanegra at Yerba Buena Gardens. Her concert credits include Beethoven 9th with Napa Valley Symphony and Shostakovich From Yiddish Folk Poetry with Berkeley Symphony. A native of Spokane, Washington, Melton holds a bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a master’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. While at Curtis, she performed the roles of Lady Billows (Albert Herring), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), and the title roles of Alcina and Ariadne auf Naxos. The soprano was a national semi-finalist at the 2006 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and winner of the 2006 Mario Lanza Competition. David Karanas Mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas, a Louisiana native, is a first-year Adler Fellow. She sang the role of Tisbe in the 2007 production of La Cenerentola with the Merola Opera Program. Karanas made her professional debut in 2006 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, singing Vierte nackte Jungfrau in Schoeberg’s Moses und Aron. Operatic roles include Ericlea (Il Ritorno D’Ulisse) with Chicago Opera Theater; Lady with a Hat Box (Postcard from Morocco) and Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica) with Boston University Opera Institute; Marchesa Melibea (Il Viaggio a Reims) with Music Academy of the West; Mère Marie (Dialogue des Carmélites), Judith (Bluebeard’s Castle), Mother (Amahl and the Night Visitors), and Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia) with Arizona State University; Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Mme. Pernelle (Tartuffe), and Baba (The Medium) with Southeastern Louisiana University. She holds a master's degree in opera performance from Arizona State University and a bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Southeastern Louisiana University. Her awards include Western regional finalist and Gulf Coast regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Grand Prize winner in the Arizona Opera League Competition, and a recipient of the Encouragement Award at the Marilyn Horne Foundation.
Tenor Andrew Bidlack, a first-year Adler Fellow, hails from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and was a 2007 participant in the Merola Opera Program, where he created the role of Charles Carter in the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri’s The Hotel Casablanca. Recent professional engagements include performances of Rodolfo (La Bohème) with the Opera Company of Brooklyn as well as Tamino (The Magic Flute) with Ohio Northern University, Rolla (I Masnadieri) and Don Curzio (Le Nozze di Figaro) with the Sarasota Opera Company. At the Spoleto Festival in Italy, he performed the role of Guest in Gian Carlo Menotti's The Saint of Bleecker Street, which was recorded on the Chandos label. As an apprentice at Florida Grand Opera he covered Ferrando (Così fan tutte) and with Des Moines Metro Opera’s Young Artists Program he performed Bastien in Mozart’s Bastien and Bastienna. He has also completed apprenticeships with the Santa Fe Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Opera North in New Hampshire. Upcoming engagements include his debut with San Francisco Opera as Lamplighter/Drunkard (The Little Prince) followed by Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Simpleton (Boris Godunov) and Graf Albert (Die Tote Stadt) with the company. Ji Young Yang Soprano Ji Young Yang, a native of Korea, is a second-year Adler Fellow and was a participant in the 2006 Merola Opera Program where she performed Ilia in excerpts from Idomeneo at Yerba Buena Gardens. She made her San Francisco Opera debut as the Young Shepherd in Tannhäuser, also appeared as Pamina (The Magic Flute for Families) and Julia Agnes Lee (Appomattox). Recent performances include Beth in Mark Adamo’s Little Women, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Despina in Cosi fan tutte all with the Opera Theater of New England Conservatory. Other performances include Sandrina in La Finta Giardiniera at Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute, Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito conducted by Julius Rudel at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York, Héro in Béatrice et Bénédict, Peaseblossom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Livia in Caldara’s Il Giuoco del Quadriglio and Mademoiselle Silberklang in scenes from The Impresario at Manhattan School of Music. Concert performances include soprano soloist for Brahm’s Requiem with New England Conservatory Choir and Orchestra. The soprano began her formal studies at Seoul National University and has since studied at Manhattan School of Music and New England Conservatory of Music and has also been a participant at the Salzburg Summer Festival and Songfest summer program. In 2006 she was a New England Regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was awarded The Frank and Carmela Pandolfi Award in Connecticut Opera Guild’s Annual Scholarship Competition.
Coach and accompanist Matthew Piatt a second Year Adler Fellow, is an alumnus of the Merola Opera Program. He accompanied soprano Ailyn Perez in her Schwabacher Debut Recital last January. Piatt has worked with the Houston Grand Opera Studio, playing recitals at the McNay Art Museum of San Antonio, and with the Dallas Wagner Society. As an apprentice coach, he participated in the Aspen Opera Theater Center and the Seagle Music Colony. The Kansas native holds a master’s degree in collaborative piano from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Martin Katz. He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in piano from the University of Houston. During his studies there, he served as a coach and accompanist for twelve productions at the Moores Opera Center, which included the world premiere of The Thirteen Clocks by Christopher Theofanidis and a production of Dominick Argento's Casanova's Homecoming, which was recorded for Newport Classics.
